I had honestly forgotten about the Almeida fight.

There have been a lot of injuries and adjustments to recent fights. It's almost to the point where I need to keep a history on upcoming fights so I remember how they started. What all the injuries and adjustments do is put a bigger emphasis on non-title fights. With good matchups for people in the 20 top (or just outside it) you create more options and a broader stable of fighters to draw from.

My real point with the Fitch situation though is how it can impact the overall rankings. If Fitch wins he's not going to get a lot of points...certainly not Alves or Condit(I'd like to see that fight) level points. On the other hand, if he loses he's going to take a solid dip. If a month or two from now someone like Swick, Condit, or Daley is higher than Fitch some will be upset and blame the ranking system. Really though, it's far more complex than that and as you say, injuries, last minute changes, and a host of other factors play into it.

Hopefully that situation and some of the others will help people see the line between the mma ranking system and the actual mma rankings that get produced. I've got a fantastic blender that does wonders on milkshakes, smoothies and panny-cakes. If someone were to put metal bolts in there though...well the results might not be so hot. The ranking system is the middle man, it takes the input, it produces the output. It's not fair to look at just the output and blame the machine without making sure the input was reasonable/correct/edible.

Having said that I shall now go fix myself a milkshake while I wait for the site to finish updating...Middleweight ranting tomorrow.

To be fair about the Fitch's next fight, it WAS originally scheduled to be Almeida (coming down from MW, so I'd give that a pass), then Alves (#5 -- I'm upset this got cancelled) in a rematch, leaving Pierce (who at 1914 isn't THAT bad) as essentially a last-minute fill in.

I'd have rather seen Fitch vs Condit, though. I'm not too upset given the short notice though.
